The Journey and Inspiration

Student to Socrates: “How long is the journey to Rome?”
Socrates to student: “Start walking and I will tell you.”

The inspiration to go on an adventure of a lifetime came from several sources but mainly from having partially grown up around one of the most adventurous people I know, e.g.; Captain Don Stewart. You can read on how his “Cookie Crumbled” here: http://www.infobonaire.com/captdon/profile.html Yet another source for the inspiration came a few years back when I read a fictional story entitled: “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari”. The fable is about a very successful lawyer that sold all his possessions and moved to India to “find himself” and to learn from the Himalayan Guru’s. Certainly my all time favorite book entitled “Jitterbug Perfume” by Tom Robbins had something do with it. It is an epic tale that deals with immortality / mortality and it was during my third reading of the book that it struck me that I needed to go on an adventure of a lifetime before it was too late and I was young enough to endure it.

What I do for a living requires a computer tablet, a cell phone, a laptop and internet connection. This allows me the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. So when I read that there has only been one verified circumambulation (to travel around something by foot, in this case the earth) the thought occurred to me that I need to be the next one. You can read about the first walk around the world here: http://home.earthlink.net/~earthwalker1

The journey will begin sometime in late July 2011 and will start in Boston and is expected to last around 3 years. The first leg of the journey will be Boston to Los Angeles and is expected to take around 160 days. After a brief rest the stroll will continue in mid January 2012 and will take place from Sydney, Australia to Perth, Australia and is expected to last just under 5 months. From there I will fly to Portugal and trek across Europe up to Finland. This portion of the trip will not count towards the circumambulation but just as a nice way to spend the summer and fall. From Finland it is off to Port Elizabeth, South Africa in October where I will stroll across South Africa from east to west into Cape Town. I expect to reach Cape Town sometime in mid December 2012 and will then fly into Buenos Aires, Argentina and walk onward to Valparaiso, Chile. Although this part of the journey is only around 1,000 miles it involves some very rough terrain and is expected to last around 6 months. At this point, around June 2013, I will have circumambulated the earth. However, I will most likely spend the next year visiting and walking around various Countries and Islands in the Pacific and in mid 2014 I will decide where I’m going to spend the rest of my life!
